Notes:Matthew Hervey, in Portugal as an observer before the English intervention in the Portuguese civil war, is captured and held prisoner in a fortress just inside Spain. A group of his friends from the cavalry, accompanied by Isabella Delgado, a Portuguese widow, ride in and rescue him. Back in England, Hervey is put in charge of his regiment when the commanding officer is killed in a carriage accident. While all this is going on, Hervey reminisces about the battles of Talavera and Badajoz during the Napoleonic Wars.

Review - An Act of Courage

As in the previous book in the series, most of the action takes place in flashbacks so that there are two stories progressing simultaneously, with frequent interruptions. The maps for the battles were totally inadequate, making the accounts difficult to follow. The writing and characters are interesting enough to make the book enjoyable anyway, but not as good as it could be.
