Notes:Cadfael learns that his birth son, Olivier, has been taken prisoner in the ongoing war between King Stephen and Queen Maud. Olivier's friend, Philip FitzRobert, changed sides from the Queen to the King, but Olivier refused to go with him and so was put in the dungeon of the castle La Musarderie. Cadfael travels there to find him. When Maud finds out Philip is in the castle, she besieges it, stating her intent to hang Philip for treason. Philip is injured and lies near death. He released Olivier. Cadfael, with the help of Olivier's brother-in-law and Olivier, sneaks Philip out of the castle to keep the ongoing war from getting worse. Philip, in thanks for his life, joins the church, and for this reason. Cadfael's abbot welcomes him back into the brotherhood.

Review - Brother Cadfael's Penance

Interesting enough, and a good wrap-up to the series. It's a bit hard to believe that a monk could gain access and influence in the top circles of British power, but what do I know?
