| Notes: | Esther Lyon is the pretty, somewhat conceited stepdaughter of a Dissenting minister in a small English town. Felix Holt is an ardent reformer who gave up medicine to pursue political justice for the poor. Esther is moved by Felix's enthusiasm — and by Felix — but just at the time when she finds out he returns the feeling, Felix is arrested and thrown in jail. He had gotten involved in a riot during an election. He was trying to stop the violence, but to onlookers, he appeared to be one of the leaders. One of the candidates in the election was Harold Transome, the local landowner. A twist of fate reveals the fact that Esther is really the proper heir of the Transome property. She goes to live on the estate. Harold's idea is to marry Esther, thereby solving the whole inheritance issue. In time, he actually finds himself loving her. When he discovers her interest in Felix, he exerts himself to help Felix go free. Esther rejects Harold and marries Felix, but she cares for Harold enough to reject her claim on the estate. |
