Notes:Bellarion was an orphan, raised for the church. He sets off across Italy to learn Greek, but on the way, falls in with a thief disguised as a monk. When the guards attempt to arrest them, Bellarion hides in a garden where he meets Princess Valeria. She thinks him a messenger in the service of a group who are attempting to help her overthrow the reign of Regent Theodore and give it to her brother, the rightful heir. Bellarion determines to dedicate his life to helping the princess. He kills one of the plotters who was a spy for Theodore, but Valeria, not knowing of the man's duplicity, hates Bellarion for what he did. He heads to a neighboring kingdom, convinces a duke to adopt him and rises through the ranks to be commander of a large army. Five years later, his plots and trickery all coming together, he returns to the original city and overthrows Theodore. Valeria finally realizes that he has been her champion all along and pledges her love.

Review - Bellarion the Fortunate

Bellarion was ridiculously noble, intelligent and wise, and was often rather a prig about it, which made it hard to either like him or believe in him. But the story itself was fun enough to keep my attention.
