He travels to another island where he meets Lena, an English girl who is practically a slave and being treatened by Schomberg, a gross, fat innkeeper. Heyst helps the girl escape and takes her back to his island where they fall in love. Schomberg gets his revenge by telling two criminals, Mr. Jones and Mr. Ricardo, that Heyst has a lot of money hidden away. They travel to the island. Lena, to save Heyst, pretends to conspire with Ricardo. When Jones discovers that his partner is dallying with a woman, he gets angry and shoots Ricardo and Lena, then wanders off the pier and drowns himself. Heyst, realizing what Lena has done for him, burns down the house over her corpse, with him inside.

Review - Victory

The basic story was fairly riveting, but Conrad's writing is overblown, his dialogue is outlandish and the editing and/or translation was terrible. I did find myself hoping for a happy ending for Heyst and Lena, two people who had never experienced happiness of any sort.
