Notes:Subtitle: The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey

This book is unfinished in that only three chapters were completed before Patrick O'Brian died, but also in that what is here is raw and unpolished. Jack sails the Surprise to Rio where he takes over his squadron as Admiral of the Blue. He sends home and has Sophie and his daughters join him on the ship. Stephen has Brigid come too, with his fiancee Christine and her brother, Edward. Jack sails for South Africa. On board is a soldier named Miller who pays unwanted attention to Christine. When Stephen approaches him, Miller calls him a liar and slaps him. Miller, an expert with pistols, intends to kill Stephen, but Stephen, as the injured party, gets to chose the weapons and soon disarms Miller and forces an apology. That's pretty much were things end.

Dissatisfying, both because there isn't more and because there is this much. On the one hand, I wish the series could continue indefinitely, but it's hard to imagine without the war going on. Since it had to end, ending with Jack becoming an admiral would have been the perfect place.
