Notes:Subtitle: Charlie Grimm, the Billy Goat Curse, and the 1945 World Series Run

An account of the 1945 season and post season. The Cubs won the National League pennant with a 98-56 record, finishing two-and-a-half games ahead of the Cardinals. They played Detroit in the World Series. The travel schedule was adjusted because of the war. The first three games were played in Detroit and the Cubs won two of them. The final four games were played in Chicago. Detroit won the first two. The Cubs pulled out game six but exhaused their pitching staff and won game seven 9-3.

William Sianis, owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, frequently brought his goat to games during the season, buying it a ticket. When he and the goat were ejected before game four at Wrigley Field, Sianis cursed the Cubs. Wrigley's reason was, "The goat smells." After the Cubs lost the series, Sianis wrote Wrigley a telegram that read "Now who smells?"

Review - Cubs Win the Pennant!, The

A workmanlike account that gave me a good understanding of the series and had some bits of good analysis. But for the most part it was a parade of statistics and scores that were tough slogging. Add to this the fact that almost everything said in the book was repeated at least once — all in all, it was a pretty dull book.
