| Notes: | Escaping from a British prisoner-of-war camp in India, the great Austrian climber headed for the mountains, Tibet, and freedom. It took him and a companion two years to make their way across the coutnry. Amazingly, he got all the way to Lhasa, where he befriended the young Dalai Lama and worked as his tutor until the Chinese invaded in 1950. |
