Notes:This particular version was titled First Man West: Alexander Mackenzie's Account of His Expedition Across North America to the Pacific in 1793. Notes and history have been added by Walter Sheppe.

In 1793, Alexander Mackenzie, a fur trader, led a small group of men from the established post on Lake Athabasca to the Pacific Ocean (at the mouth of the Bella Coola River) and back again. His journal records his adventures with nature and Indians and his measures of distance and direction. He was traveling to open new trade routes and so didn't spend much time observing nature, although he has a fair bit to say about Indian tribes he met along the way.

Review - Journal of the Voyage to the Pacific

Mackenzie wanted to make this trip to find new trading routes, so he didn't tarry along the way to look around much. He complains a great deal about the Indians and his men, but he made it. It's impressive, although the thinks I mentioned above keep it from being a great book.
