Notes:Subtitle: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

The story of the nine-man rowing crew from the University of Washington in Seattle. Much of the story is told from the point of view of Joe Rantz, one of the rowers who grew up in a poor, broken home and fought issues of abandonment and distrust. Throughout, the story of Nazi Germany and its preparations for the 1936 Olympics are woven in.

Review - Boys in the Boat, The

I enjoyed the story, but there really isn't a lot of difference between one rowing race and another and so the accounts get a bit redundant. Also, to pad the book, there are many, many paragraphs describing the weather or the buildings in one town or another or the clothes the rowers wear. I found myself rushing through those sections. Probably the best parts are those telling the story of Joe Rantz and his troubled childhood during the Depression.
