Notes:Gus Orviston's parents are famous for their fishing. His dad fly fishes, his mom uses bait. This causes a feud in the family, and while Gus refuses to take sides he becomes an excellent fisherman himself. But the family discord drives him to leave home and live in a cabin on a creek and search for the meaning to life. He explores religion, philosophy, hedonism (fishing 16 hours a day), mysticism and altruism, but the meaning of life eludes him until he meets Eddy, a beautiful girl with her own unusual style of fishing. Their first meeting is awkward. They part but he pines for her and finally, she shows up at his cabin. They marry, and Gus reconciles with his family.

Review - River Why, The

I read it because I saw the movie and thought it interesting enough. If it was just the story of Gus's search for meaning, it would have been better, but the author had to drag us through all of the fables and philosophies themselves, which got pretty dull at times. I would have preferred a simple tale about a man who chooses the simple life and meets a girl to share it with.
