Notes:Brosnan was a pitcher — mostly relief but with some starts — for the 1959 Cardinals and Reds. He started the season with St. Louis and did poorly. In June, he was traded to Cincinnati and pitched better, finishing 8-3 with a 3.36 ERA with the Reds. This book is his diary of the season, in which he writes about his relationships with players, coaches and managers and his conversations on how to get opposing batters out. He discusses his insecurities and worries and his successes and failures on the mound as the Reds tried, and failed to get into the fourth place for a share of World Series Money.

Reviews for The Long Season

Review - Long Season, The

Controversial when it came out due to its supposed frankness, but it is extremely tame by today's standards, with only hints here and there of player drug use or carousing. A lot of it is in dialogue, most of which wasn't interesting enough for me to pay strict attention. The best line came from a pre-game discussion of opposing batters — "Don't give him anything good to hit. Maybe you can pick him off first."
