Notes:Max Eisenstein is a Jew living in America. His partner in an art business is Martin Schulse, a German who has recently returned to live in Germany just as Hitler comes to power. Max writes to Martin expressing his concern about the direction Germany is taking. Martin responds with increasing support for the new regime and its treatment of Jews. Max is disturbed that his old friend takes this view. Max's actress sister Griselle, who once had a fling with Martin, is hounded off the stage in Berlin and pursued. She shows up at Martin's door, but he refuses to help her and she is killed by soldiers. Martin writes to Max telling him he can have no association with Jews so stop writing. Instead, for revenge, Max sends a long series of friendly-sounding letters with obscure meanings. The officials in Germany conclude that Martin is in cahoots with Jews and he disappears. Max's last letter is returned "Address Unknown."

Review - Address Unknown

A bit obvious, but the ending, with Max's revenge done so cleverly, makes the story. Interesting that it was written in 1938.
