| Notes: | I Capture the Castle relates, in the voice of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain, whose journals covering six months of 1935 comprise the novel’s text, the adventures of a remarkable family that lives, in impoverished eccentricity, in the ruins of a six-hundred-year-old castle (complete with moat) in Suffolk. In addition to Cassandra, there’s Rose, her older sister, whose romantic intrigues much occupy our narrator; a younger brother; a sprite-like former artist’s model who is their stepmother; and the paterfamilias, James Mortmain, a once successful and lionized experimental writer. COMMENTS — Dodie Smith is probably best known for writing The Hundred and One Dalmatians. |
