A comprehensive biography, with passages on all John Wayne's movies and the directors and actors he worked with. While not skipping his private life, it isn't covered very extensively, perhaps because there wasn't much of it.

Review - John Wayne

Wayne is described as a lonely boy from a dysfunctional family who grew up driven and principled. He created a character that portrayed the man he wanted to be and played that role in all his movies, rejecting many that didn't fit the mold. He was loved and admired by almost all who got to know him well, even many liberals who disagreed with him strongly. He was a hard worker, sensitive to those he came in contact with and he loved his children. He was married three times, but rarely happily and he was frequently unfaithful, especially early in his career. He was a much better actor, and a much smarter man, than many give him credit for.
