South Pass, in southern Wyoming, was the only place a wagon could be driven across the Continental Divide before roads were made. Because of this, it became a major thoroughfare across the country for immigrants, stagecoaches, the Pony Express, mountain men, and the telegraph.

Review - South Pass

I got the basic gist, but even one decent map would have helped. The author was thorough. I don't think he neglected to include every record he could find of every last person who used the route before 1867, when the South Pass gold fever petered out. This created a great deal of redundancy and boring detail.
