Notes:Subtitle: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West

A history of New Mexico from 1846 when Stephen Kearny led his army into Santa Fe in a bloodless takeover of the territory from Mexico, through the Civil War, to the removal of the Navajo's to their reservation in 1868. Kit Carson was involved as guide, officer, and sometime government official through it all.

Review - Blood and Thunder

Kit Carson was the thread, but otherwise it was tricky to find a central theme. The story included Fremont's explorations and the awkward American conquest of California. It wasn't about the West, as the subtitle claims, but just a collection of history mainly centering on New Mexico. It was well written, and I now live close enough to many of the locations mentioned that I've been there or can imagine them.
