Notes:Subtitle: My Life with the Ravens at the Tower of London

The author is one of the Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London. He is also the official Ravenmaster, who takes care of the seven ravens that live in the tower. While allowed out on the grounds during the day, the birds are clipped to prevent flight and are kept in an enclosure at night. Skaife discusses his life leading up to the assignment, ravens in general and his ravens in particular, and the legend that if the ravens disappear from the tower, the British Empire will collapse.

Review - Ravenmaster, The

Skaife gives tours of the tower, and his book read like a tour guide. In the end, I felt like I didn't really know a lot about him or the birds beyond the surface. Many of the chapters were rather dry. Maybe there just wasn't enough information to fill and entire book.

The warders tell visitors that the legend dates back to Charles II, but in the book, Skaife admits that there's no evidence of it prior to the late 1800's. He thinks it's a story created by the early tour guides to amuse visitors. I think he's probably right.
