Notes:Subtitle: An Odyssey Across the American Divide

In the 1850s, Frederick Law Olmsted traveled across the American South to talk to people about slavery. He hoped to find a way to end it, but ended up militantly hating it. He wrote a book about his travels and the people he met.

Horwitz followed Olmsted's path as closely as he could, talking with people about politics and culture and duplicating Olmsted's adventures.

Review - Spying on the South

It was well written, as all Horwitz's books are, but somehow I struggled to stay interested. Horwitz prides himself on being able to get along with and talk with anyone, no matter their views, and he does here. But his liberal views came through subtly, especially when describing Christians and Trump supporters. The parts about Olmsted were interesting, but somehow it didn't come together for me.
