Notes:Harold Fry, in his mid-60s, has lived a life without accomplishment. His marriage to Maureen has been dead for 20 years, ever since their son David committed suicide. One day Harold receives a letter from Queenie, an old coworker who did him a favor that he never thanked her for. She's dying in hospice in Scotland, 600 miles away. Harold writes her a letter and sets out to mail it—and never stops walking. He sends word to Queenie to stay alive until he gets there. Out of shape, Harold struggles, but is helped by kind people along the way. He becomes a celebrity and gathers a group of fellow-walkers. But they abandon him and he goes on alone. His absence makes Maureen realize she misses and loves him. The begin to reconnect over Harold's occasional phone calls. He finally makes it to Queenie. She has stayed alive until he arrives, but dies the next day. Maureen drives up to be with Harold, and together, they begin to live again.

Review - Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, The

I couldn't help rooting for Harold and Maureen to get back together. The walking part of the story also appealed to me—I find clarity, escape, and hope in walking. In the end, the author has Harold and Maureen reject faith, which was sad.
