Notes:Daniel Marvin is first mate on the Olive Branch a merchant barque from Maine. He's in love with Corunna Dorman, the captain's daughter, who is aboard on a trip home from China. When the ship is attacked by a British ship, Captain Dorman is killed. Daniel surrenders the ship instead of risking the lives of all aboard, to Corunna's disgust. Daniel is put in the hold of the British ship with Captain Slade, the master of an American slave ship, and Argandeau, a French captain. When the British ship is in turn captured by an American privateer. Corunna is given back her ship. She makes Slade her first mate and nothing but disdain for Marvin. The Olive Branch heads to a French port. Slade disappears for a while, and while he's gone the ship is taken yet again by the British who sail boldly into the French Port. Marvin is put on a hulk off Britain, but soon escapes with Argandeau. He knows Slade is a trader, but Corunna doesn't and still hates Marvin. When Slade is given a privateer by the British, Corunna goes alone with him. Marvin and Argandeau make a deal with the French and get another ship. They pretend to be a helpless American brig, and Slade attacks. Marvin defeats him and takes Corunna aboard his vessel. She finally realizes that Slade is scum and Marvin has been right all along.

Review - Captain Caution

Overly complicated, with ships being captured and released and recaptured. The dialogue is often horribly corny. Marvin is portrayed as a cautious man who always does the right thing. The book kept my interest, but it certainly isn't a classic or one I'll read again.
