Notes:In the turmoil of Texas immediately after the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kidd makes a living traveling to small towns and reading newspapers to crowds. In northern Texas, he is offered $50 to take Johanna, a 10-year-old German girl, back to her relatives near San Antonio. Johanna was taken captive by Kiowas when she was 6, after they murdered her parents and sister. Johanna acts and thinks like an Indian. She has very few memories of her former life. But she comes to trust Kidd. He teaches her English as they travel, and shows her how to care for the horses and cook on his little stove. They are attacked by white slavers, and Johanna helps fend them off by coming up with the idea of loading shotgun shells with dimes. When the trip is over, Kidd realizes Johanna's aunt and uncle intend to treat her like a servant. He takes her to San Antonio to live with him and his married daughter. When she is 15, Johanna marries a traveling cattle trader and makes a life for herself, although she always thinks like a Kiowa.

Review - News of the World

The writing style takes some getting used to, and is confusing at times. Jiles doesn't use quote marks and often doesn't mention who is speaking. But the characters are great. I cared about Kidd and Johanna and found the book hard to put down.
