Notes:Two couples, Larry and Sally Morgan and Sid and Charity Lang, meet as young professors at a college in Wisconsin. Although the Lang's are wealthy and the Morgans decidedly are not, they bond and become best friends, which includes summers at the Lang's camp in Vermont. Over the years, they have adventures good and bad, including Sally's polio which leaves her crippled. Larry becomes a successful writer, while Sid never amounts to much in spite of Charity's planning and driving. At 60, Charity develops cancer. Her family and the Morgan's gather at the camp, but even then, everyone has to follow Charity's plan to die quietly while everyone has a picnic.

Review - Crossing to Safety

Excellent writing, with well-drawn characters. Not a lot happens apart from the regular lives of four regular people, but I felt like I knew them and, in the case of the Morgans, liked them. Charity's need to be in charge and force everyone around her would be more than I could take.
