A weird book. A lot of it was about a guy from a broken home who sees baseball as an escape and who is afraid to fail because then he would have to go back to his ugly life. His (undefined) faith keeps him from drink and sex. although he fits in OK with his teammates who do both. In the end, he figures out that baseball itself isn't that important, but a caring person can use it to make a difference in his own life and in the life of others. He realized that baseball wouldn't fix his family or make his marriage a good one, but "a man of integrity can make any profession seem heroic by how he lives while doing it."

All good. But the other three-quarters of the book were profanity-laced descriptions of minor leaguers' conversations about defecating and chasing women, and that got very old very quickly. For a baseball book, there was very little about what happens between the foul lines.
