| Notes: | During the siege of Sarajevo in the early 1990's, a cellist played a piece of classical music in the middle of the street ever day for 22 days to honor the victims of a shell fired by enemy forces. He paid no attention to the fact that he was in range of the snipers who terrorized the city. Galloway uses that as the background of three stories of people in the city during the fighting. Arrow is a young woman with talent as a sniper. She is asked to protect the cellist, but by the end of the book, she is drafted by the army and tasked with killing political targets. She refuses to kill anyone but soldiers, so she herself is killed. Kenan is a middle-aged man with a family. The book tells how he has to walk across the city with jugs to get water for his family from a spring. He is afraid, but he keeps doing it anyway, including getting water for the mean woman who lives downstairs. Dragan is an older man who works in a bread factory. His work provides food for his sister's family. Caught in an attack one day, he refuses to accept war as the reality and struggles to pull a dead body out of the killing zone. |
