Notes:Enid Roach, single, 39, lives in a boarding house in a small town in England during the war. She spends time with an American lieutenant and thinks she likes him. She makes friends with a German girl, Vicki. And she's persecuted by the bully Mr. Thwaites. When Vicki moves into the boarding house, things begin to go bad. First, Vicki steals the lieutenant away from Miss Roach. Then she joines Mr. Thwaites in his persecution of Miss Roach. Through gossip and innuendo, Vicki makes life miserable. Finally, the timid Miss Roach has enough. She lashes out at Thwaite, finds out the lieutenant never took her seriously and leaves the boarding house. She moves back to London and has a more positive outlook on life.

Review - Slaves of Solitude, The

It kept me reading, but in the end there wasn't much of a resolution. In addition, most of the characters, including Miss Roach, acted like children much of the time.
