Notes:Detective Lew Archer is hired by Maude Slocum to find out who is blackmailing her. She lives with her husband, her daughter Cathy, and her mother-in-law, but somebody found out about an indiscretion. In the end, Archer finds out that Maude was in love with Knudson, a local cop who was really Cathy's father. Along the way, Maude, her mother-in-law, and several other people die. There's a huge red herring about an oil company owner who wants drilling rights on the Slocum property, but none of that had anything to do with the reason Archer was originally hired.

Reviews for The Drowning Pool

Review - Drowning Pool, The

One of those hard-boiled detective novels that keeps bringing in more people for the tough detective to deal with or show heart to. The sentences were well-written, but the plot was ridiculously complicated.
