A force of 81 men from the fort went out on December 21 of that year to fight off a band of Indians attacking a wood-gathering party. The attack was a decoy, and the 81 men were soon surrounded and wiped out by more then 1,500 Indians. The fort was abandoned and burned a year later.

Review - Fetterman Massacre, The

I read the book a week after visiting the fort and the battle site. The story is told quickly and clearly and paints a vivid picture of the hardship and tension of the soldiers at that isolated post.
