Notes:Russian Count Alexander Rostov is confined by the Communists within Moscow's Metropol Hotel. He spends the next 30 years in the building, making friends with the staff, having a longstanding fling with the actress Anna, and meeting government officials and visiting foreigners. Disgusted with the service by Communist waiters, he becomes the head waiter in the hotel's fancy restaurant. And then one day a friend asks him to watch her young daughter, Sofia. The friend never returns, and Alexander raises Sofia as his daughter. She becomes an accomplished pianist, and in her early 20's, travels to Paris with a Russian orchestra. With the help of an American diplomat, Alexander arranges her defection. He then leaves the hotel in disguise, fakes his escape into Finland, and returns to rural Russia where he grew up, and where he finds Anna waiting for him.

Review - A Gentleman in Moscow

Slow-moving in places, as you would expect of a 462-page book that takes place entirely in a single building. But the characters were grand and loveable, and the ending satisfying.
