| Notes: | The author's great-uncle was captured as a boy by Comanche Indians in Texas in 1870. After a couple of years with the tribe, he was returned to his family but never really adjusted. The author explores his history, and that of several other white boys and girls who were kidnapped and imprisoned by the Comanches. He explores their histories and tries to explain why most of them converted to Indian life so quickly but took much longer to convert back to civilization. A few returned to live with the Indians on the reservations. His conclusion is that life for settlers in Texas was hard and unenjoyable while males in the Comanche camps got to go on raids and hunt and lay around while the women did all the hard work. |
