Review - Bugles in the Afternoon
Well-written, with good characters. There were some clunky bits of dialogue between Kern and Josephine, but overall I was rooting for them.

| Notes: | Set in the context of the 1876 campaign against the Sioux that ended with Custer's defeat. Kern Shafter travels west to join the 7th Cavalry. On the way, he meets Josephine, a young woman returning to her home in Bismarck. They become friends. She wants more, but Kern is haunted by his past. During the Civil War, the woman he loved was seduced by his best friend Garnett—who also happens to be part of the 7th. The two men are thrown together during the battle on Reno's hill. Garnett is killed. Kern is injured. Back at Fort Lincoln, he reflects on life and finds a way to escape his past and commit to Josephine. |
