Notes:When a woman is shot on a remote Australian ranch, and her young daughter kidnapped, Detective Napoleon Bonaparte (Bony) is sent to investigate. The murderer appears to be an old White man named Yorky, but the Aborigines are oddly unwilling to help find him. During his investigation, Bony meets Meena, a half-breed (like Bony himself) who is pledged to the tribal elder but loves Charlie, a young Aborigine. Eventually, Bony discovers that one of the ranch hands killed the woman. Yorky took the young girl to protect her and is living in the desert. The Aborigines know Yorky is innocent because one of them saw the real murderer fleeing. Bony tracks down Yorky and the girl. On the way back to the ranch, the murderer tries to kill them, but Charlie sneaks up on him and disarms him. Bony buys Meena from the tribal elder and then gives her to Charlie as a trade for his help.

Review - Bony Buys a Woman

Weird book in many ways, but a fascinating setting for a mystery, with good characters and interesting lore.
