Newby, a British soldier, was captured by the Italians while on a pre-invasion raid in Sicily. He was in an Italian prison when the Italians quit the war, and he managed to avoid being rounded up when the Germans moved in. He met and fell in love with Wanda, a Slovakian girl, who helped him get away. He spent several months in the fall and winter of 1942 with Italian farmers who helped him as a way to get back at the Fascists. He was finally reported and recaptured. That's where the story ends except for a final chapter from after the war when he and Wanda, now his wife, returned to the farms and found many of the people who helped him.

Review - When the Snow Comes, They Will Take You Away

Well-written, exciting, and often funny. The only issue I have with the book is the way it ends without resolution. How did Newby spend the rest of the war? How did he find Wanda? I'll have to read the next book.
