Notes:Dante, the character visits hell and witnesses the punishments of the damned. His tour is guided by Virgil. The action takes place during the author’s exile from Italy and serves as a microcosm of the country’s problems while at the same time representing the fall of man.

COMMENTS — Inferno is part one of The Divine Comedy. Purgatorio chronicles a tour through purgatory, Paradiso, a trip through paradise. The entire piece is written in the terza rima rhyme scheme (aba, bcb, cdc, etc.) to symbolize the divine number three.
