Notes:Pyle, as a correspondent, travels with the U.S. Army from the landing in the North African city of Oran through the German surrender in Tunisia. He writes, not about the big picture and battle strategy, but about the individual soldiers—even giving their names and home towns much of the time. He tells of their hopes and experiences, the army life, the reaction to danger, and the people they come in contact with. Pyle is present in the story—his own travels and thoughts, but he very much comes across as one of the men, not as an observer.

Because it's a series of columns, it jumps about a bit and didn't draw me along like a novel or history would, but the individual chapters were always well-written, always informative, always interesting.
