Notes:Monkbarns is a Scottish magistrate whose passion is local history. He meets Lovel, a young man visiting the region and who is in love with Isabella, the daughter of a local earl. The earl won't have anything to do with the match because he believes (wrongly) Lovel's birth was the result of incest. The earl has been duped by a con man and is in danger of losing everything. Monkbarns, with the help of Edie Ochiltree, a hobo of sorts, sorts out the truth, saves the earl's fortune and proves that Lovel's birth was not only honorable but that he is the son of an aristocrat.

Reviews for The Antiquary

Review - Antiquary, The

There wasn't really much of a plot. There were a lot of hard-to-read passages about local history that had nothing to do with the main story. There was a lot of dialogue in dialect that was hard to read. And there were several plot jumps where major points weren't explained and I was left to catch up as best I could. The character of Edie Ochiltree, a licensed beggar as it were, was fun, but otherwise, the characters were pretty one-dimensional.
