Notes:Richard I of England is leading a force consisting of many of the kings of Europe and their armies. In Richard's camp is Kenneth, a lowly knight who fights for the honor of Edith, Richard's kinswoman. Kenneth is given the task of guarding Richard's banner, but when Edith (or so he thinks) sends word that she needs him, Kenneth leaves his post. When he finds out that the summons was a joke by Richard's queen, he hastens back, only to find that someone has taken the banner. Richard wishes to kill Kenneth, but is stopped by a Moslem physician who had just cured Richard of a fever. Richard gives Kenneth to the physician as a slave., and the physician sends him back to Richard disguised as a Ethiopian. Kenneth is able to figure out who took Richard's banner, and Richard challenges the man to a duel. But Richard is deemed to high in rank to fight a lesser man, so Kenneth is appointed as an opportunity to regain his honor. He wins the duel, of course. It's then revealed that he's really the heir to the king of Scotland, which makes him able to marry Edith.

Reviews for The Talisman

Review - Talisman, The

This one was a slog. The basic story of Kenneth was interesting enough, but the stilted dialogue, the endless nonsense about Richard's honor, the mindless descriptions — a page and half was given over to a description of Kenneth taking a drink — was just dull.
