Notes:Caron La Boulaye is secretary to a nobleman, Marquise de Bellecour, When he intemperately professes his love for the Marquise's daughter Suzanne, he is immediately fired and then beaten. Suzanne is sympathetic and saves Caron from being killed, but can't imagine loving him because he's of a lower class. A few years later, the French Revolution breaks out. Caron is raised to a high position under the tutelage of Robespierre. He finds himself in a position to save her in return. She pledges her love but then knocks him unconscious and flees. When he sees her again, she says that her honor demanded that she reject a suitor from a lower class and stick to her betrothal to the supercilious Ombreval. When Caron is told by Robespierre to arrest Ombreval to be guillotined, he does so, but then manages to help Ombreval escape from prison for Suzanne's sake. This gets Caron sentenced in Ombreval's place, and on the day of his scheduled execution, Suzanne shows up, confesses her love and asks for his release in exchange for turning Ombreval over to Robespierre.

Review - Trampling of the Lilies, The

This one wasn't great. Apart from being described as beautiful, there was really no reason for me to like Suzanne's character until the very end—after she'd put Caron though all sorts of serious problems and nearly gotten him killed. He was a fool to keep loving her and, in fact, the premise that a leading member of the Revolution would surrender his position and life to save the jerk who was engages to the jerky woman he loved was hard to swallow.
