Notes:With Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte invented the Romantic novel of passion and created one of the most unforgettable heroines of all time. Jane Eyre is a governess, an orphan, penniless and plain but full of courage and spirit. Her employer is Mr. Rochester — a brooding, melancholy figure, given to rough outbursts of temper. Their unconventional love story is at the heart of this stormy, intense and introspective novel. Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys, is a novel about the madwoman in the attic.

Review - Jane Eyre

Infinitely better than her sister's book, Wuthering Heights. It held my interest throughout and was at times exciting. There are the usual plot contrivances, but if you read enough English literature, you come to expect these and learn to enjoy them. Jane was a likeable character, and none of the men in the book were worthy of her, especially not Rochester. I didn't care much for him, although his devotion to Jane at the end of the book redeems him somewhat. Bronte's description of the moors is the best I've read since Hardy. She also uses a funky plot device wherein the weather always mirrors the mood of the characters.
