Notes:First book in the Spenser series.

Spenser is hired by a university to find out who stole a medieval manuscript. He suspects a radical student group and tracks down its leader. He finds the leader dead and his girlfriend Terry Orchard drugged. She looks like the prime suspect, and her wealthy parents hire Spenser to clear her name. Spenser finds out that Hayden, a professor on campus, was part of the student group and goes to see him. Next thing he knows, he's got the mob making threats. Turns out Hayden and the dead guy were dealing drugs for the mob on campus. The manuscript was a side bit to get the university to fund the radical group. Spenser stirs up enough dirt that the mob wants to kill Hayden to keep him quiet. Spenser manages to save him and get him to talk, clearing Terry. At some point, the manuscript was returned.

Review - Godwulf Manuscript (1), The

The manuscript was a McGuffin. The plot was unexceptional. What made the book worth reading was Spenser's wise cracks—and the fact that it never got too complicated to follow.
