A rambling memoir of the author's experience buying, improving, and farming a piece of Texas countryside, with chapters on work, weather, livestock, wild animals, history, geography. His view, so far as I understand it, is that we all make a choice of what to do and what to know, and that working land and learning about it and the creatures on it, is just as valuable as knowing and doing other things.

Review - Hard Scrabble

Maybe too rambling. Maybe too lacking in anecdote or solid information. It took me a long time to get through it, and when I was done, I didn't feel greatly rewarded. I wanted to like it more than I did, but in the end, it wasn't really about much.
