Thurber’s style, which I enjoy, is to mock silly things (which are intended to be taken seriously, by giving examples that take the things to their logical, silly extremes. For example, to a suggestion that grooms be invited to wedding showers, he goes through a typical shower and demonstrates how bored and embarrassed the groom would be at each stage.
