Review - John Adams

I have read, I think, every book written by David McCullough, and enjoyed them all. This one I also enjoyed. It was fast-paced and interesting throughout, never bogging down even when relating events that could have been ponderous. Adams has long been one of my favorite founding fathers, and McCullough does a good job of pointing out his importance to the creation and early survival of the U.S. Still, I was disappointed somewhat. From Page Smith's biography, which I read several years ago, I came away convinced that John and Abigail Adams were both committed Christians. McCullough barely scratches the surfact of their spiritual life. He also writes a good deal about Thomas Jefferson, a man about whom the more I get to know the more I like him less. He was a hypocrite, a liberal, a coward and a back-stabber. He was also determinately against Christ and Christianity. The spiritual state of the two men probably explains an exchange that took place late in their lives. When told that Jefferson had said he'd like to live his life over again, Adams replied, "In this I could not agree; I had rather go forward and meet whatever is to come."
