Notes:After Mr. Moody died, Ralph had to be the man of the family for his mom, three sisters, and two brothers in Littleton, CO. One way and another, the family made it through, with cleverness and the help of friends. In the end, Mrs. Moody was forced to testify in a horse-thieving trial. Rather than send a man she thought was innocent to the gallows, she and her children sneaked out of town and headed back to Boston where they had relatives.

Review - Man of the Family (2)

I know times were different and kids grew up more responsible, but this book feels a bit far-fetched at times. I'm guessing it's based on truth but dramatized quite a bit. The ending, when the family skedaddles out of town to avoid having to appear as a witness in a trial felt a little over-the-top, but who knows. Maybe it all happened just this way.
