Set in Texas in 1812. A mixed force of Americans and Mexicans fight the Spaniards for control of Texas. The general plot is based on history, with characters added. Jonathan (Jonty) Kirk, Virginian, heads to Louisiana to settle. He meets Teresa, the kept woman of Salazar (a Mexican who pretends to be in favor of the Republic but really plots to become the king of Texas. Jonty doesn't realize Teresa isn't innocent and falls for her, following her to Texas and joining the Republicans himself as a scout. Along the way he meets Cecily, who is traveling with her father and brother to find a new home. She loves him, but he only has eyes for Teresa. The revolution goes well at first and the Spaniards are kicked out, but they return and defeat the Republican forces. Teresa, thwarted in her plans to become queen of Texas, takes up with a Spanish officer to save herself. Jonty manages to escape and rescue Cecily and they confess their love. Along the way, there are descriptions of actual battles and maneuvers.

Review - Sun in their Eyes

I learned about a period of history I didn't know about. The characters were a little wooden. I knew Jonty would end up with Cecily as soon as she was introduced.
