A Boomer is a railroad man who frequently moves around the country from job to job. He's different from a hobo, who doesn't work. Eddie Sands is a boomer, honest, hard-working, but restless. The book tells of several of his stops, the people he met and befriended, the work he did, the crises he faced and resolved. On two occasions, he got close to girls, but he knew he'd get restless, so in both cases, he pointed them toward other worthy men. The final section deals with a gang from another railroad who, angry with losing the right of way, kidnap the owners son and send him on a train across an uncompleted bridge. Eddie has another man swing him out onto the bridge on the end of a crane so he can jump to the engine and stop it in time.

Review - Boomer, The

I had no idea what to expect, but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Eddie was an interesting character, as were most of the others he met. His ability to always chose the right option in every crisis was a little hard to believe, and the final section definitely jumped the shark, but it was a fast, enjoyable read.
