Joe Long is leader of the social circle on the upscale Queen Street near D.C. during WWII. During a party, he falls down the stairs and breaks his neck. Bonnamy, investigator in the war department, is suspicious and begins investigating. He discovers that Long tripped on a cord someone stretched across the stairs. Long's wife soon begins believing Joe is come back from the dead. She goes crazy and kills herself. Bonnamy things she was driven to it by the same person who killed her husband. He keeps investigating. In the end, the killer is Chic Short, Long's partner in film making. He's upset that Long got all the credit while he did all the real work, so he pranked him with the cord on the stairs, not expecting to kill him. He tried to drive Long's wife out of town but ended up driving her crazy. Then he realizes he has to kill Bonnamy, but two friends show up in time to stop him.

Review - King is Dead on Queen Street, The

The writing was good, but the characters were odd—especially the six-year-old boy who roamed the neighborhood at will and climbed in and out of people's houses without anyone seeming to care. The plot was dumb and I just never cared much who did what.
