Set in North Carolina during the American Revolution. Peter Huntley is a courier who gathers intelligence and carries classified dispatches. He meets and falls for Angela Ferrier, a beautiful Spanish girl who, in turn, is in love with Anthony Allison, a spy for Britain. Even after Peter gets her parents permission to marry Angela, she desires Anthony. Peter's work takes him into the back country, and he's present at the battle of King's Mountain. Meanwhile, Anthony, fleeing from American troops, meets Angela and treats her like a camp follower. She finally sees the light and determines to love Peter. As Nathanael Greene takes over the southern Army, Peter gets leave to marry Angela.

Review - Toil of the Brave

There's an interesting plot in here somewhere — a brave soldier contending for the love of a woman who loves his greatest foe. But there are way, way, way too many characters who have nothing to do with the story, and there are pages and pages and entire chapters devoted to minutia about the financing of the war and other extraneous details.
