The troops of Fort Grant, in Arizona, are seeking to end the raids of Apache Antone and his warriors. Eleanor Warren, daughter of the post commander, returns after three years at finishing school. She's engaged to Phil Castleton, an arrogant, ambitious officer who is disliked by the men. Eleanor tries to be loyal, but she can't help noticing Tom Benteen, another officer who is brave, competent, kind, and who is liked by his men. While Benteen is out tracking Antone and leading the troop to his hideout, Castleton lets his ambition control him and repeatedly gets his men killed. In the end, Antone is defeated, Benteen is the hero, and Castleton quits the army. Eleanor ends up with Benteen. Along the way there are the stories of several other members of the troop—their fears, frustrations, hopes, and loves.

Review - Border Trumpet

Exciting as an adventure story, but even better as a character study of how men—and women—deal with harsh conditions. Haycox made me feel the miserable heat and dryness of Arizona, the fear of Indian attack, and the harshness and comfort of army life.
