During the Civil War, Adam Musick operated the only boat on the Columbia River in Portland that wasn't part of the transportation company. He faced pressure from the company, which wanted a monopoly. Adam was engaged to Edith and had been for a long time, but they had drifted apart and didn't feel strongly about each other again. He lived at a boarding house run by Lily Barnes, an attractive woman who liked him but was disturbed by his need to be fighting all the time. Also in town was a group of Confederate sympathizers who plotted to take Oregon out of the Union at election time. They were led by Ringrose, who often butted heads with Adam. In the end, Adam's boat is destroyed by Ringrose, but he and other Union men in town manage to stop the plot and capture the Confederates. Adam has a chance to kill Ringrose, but doesn't. Edith breaks off the engagement, and Adam marries Lily, and they start a farm on the river.

Review - Long Storm

Not bad but not as good as most of Haycox's books I've read. It took me a while to get into it. There were a lot of different sub-plots, some of which distracted from the story and some which had nothing to do with the story.
